New graphics chip makes the phone as tough as Xbox 360

New graphics chip makes the phone as tough as Xbox 360

Smartphone Samsung Galaxy S III have qualified graphics performance thanks to quad-core GPU-based ARM Mali-400 is embedded in it. However, it soon will appear with the mobile device is more amazing graphic quality, which is even able to match the console game.

This was promised by ARM recently introduced a new GPU based series T600 Mali on Monday (08/06/2012) then.

GPU series consists of T604 (quad core), T658 (eight cores), T624 (quad core), as well as T628 and T678 can be equipped with a number of nuclei up to 8 pieces.

Mali GPU series T600 is claimed to deliver performance that is at least 50 percent higher than the previous generation GPU and is able to present the "console class gaming".

The first product that uses the latest GPU technology from ARM is called will start popping up in September 2013.

ARM does not manufacture its own chips, but the creation of licensing the technology to other manufacturers who combine it with a number of additional components to make the chips used in mobile devices.

Examples of processors using the technology of the ARM processor and GPU series is made by Samsung SoC Exynos

In addition to smartphones and tablets, ARM target of this new GPU technology to be used also in other devices such as smart TVs and set-top box.

Currently only few smartphones that use ARM technology-based GPU, but the manufacturer claims to have mastered 70 percent market share Smart TV.

ARM GPU technology among others used by smart-made TV LG, Samsung, Sony, and Sharp.

Texture Compression

Game console device, such as Sony's Playstation 3 or Xbox 360 from Microsoft so far has a much higher quality graphics than the mobile devices because they are not constrained by issues of power consumption.

However, as the efficiency of mobile GPUs is increasing, the gap between the two platforms has been diminishing.

ARM says will rival or even exceed-quality graphics-capable game console currently served by applying the data compression technology called Adaptive Scalable Texture Compression (ASTC) in Mali GPU series T600.

ASTC allows developers to use less data to create a higher graphical detail. Supported APIs include OpenCL 1.1, OpenGL ES 1.1, OpenGL ES 2.0, OpenGL ES 3.0, DirectX 11 FL 9_3, DirectX 11, and Google Renderscript.

"In this way, consumers can enjoy the graphic appearance of a higher quality without wasting batteries," said Steve Steele, product manager ARM processing media division was quoted as saying by the BBC.

"Compressed textures are important because the data processing requires energy. Thus, the less data that must be processed, the longer the battery life of your device."

Mali T600 is capable of processing 2D graphics, 3D, as well as High Dynamic Range image format, or popularly called HDR.
