Motherboard is a circuit board where various interconnected electronic components such as a PC or Macintosh and usually shortened to "mobo". Another understanding of the motherboard or mainboard is the main form of pcb board with bios chip (driver program), lines and connectors as liaison access each device. Since the motherboard was the all components of the PC will be united.
The motherboard connects all the computer and make it work together so that your computer runs smoothly. In the motherboard itself are the parts with their respective functions. Here's part of the inside of the motherboard:
1. Chipset
The chipset is an electronic circuit that coordinate the transfer of data between the various components of the computer (including CPU and memory). The most important in the selection of the type of chipset motherboard. Because the effect to maximize computer chipset (an upgrade). In general, there are two main chipset on the motherboard Southbridge and Northbridge.
2. BIOS (Basic Input / Output System)
BIOS (Basic Input / Output System) is a basic program that is used as an interface between the operating system and the motherboard. BIOS is stored in ROM (read-only memory), using the data within. In the BIOS there is a program that can be used to adjust how the components installed on the motherboard to work.
2. CMOS Batteries
The real-time clock (RTC short) is a circuit that synchronises with the signal system. Are made of crystals that vibrate and give off pulses (ticks named time) to maintain elements of the system running at the same time Batery serves as an energy source in identifying the components installed on the motherboard.
3. Socket / Slot Processor
In general there are 2 types for the processor socket and slot. Usually every motherboard possess only one type of socket instance, or slot only. but there also has more than one socket or slot, typically used for multi-processor.
4. RAM slots
The motherboard has a special slot for RAM, as well as the processor. And each different type of motherboard ram SLOT types included in the motherboard. For an older motherboard using SDRAM slot, while new types currently using DDR3.
5. Expansion Slot
This slot is an extra slot or external to the computer. When you want to upgrade your computer or added functionality - functionality, just add the equipment you need in expansion. Suppose want to sharpen the view by installing the VGA card. Expansion Slot consists of various types such as PCI, PCIExpress, and AGP.
6. I / O Port
I / O port is an abbreviation of Input / output. I / O ports include:
- Parallel Port (LPT), commonly used for printer or joystick still using parallel cable
- COM port, a port for a mouse or keyboard-based COM port
- Port PS / 2, these ports are round, usually used for ball or optical mouse and keyboard-based Port PS / 2
- Game port, used for Game Pad
- Port USB 1.1 / USB 2.0 (Universal Serial Bus) because of the universal nature of these ports can be used for all hardware such as mice, keyboards, printers, flash disks, digital cameras, and others - others who use the type of USB cable
- LAN for network connectivity
- Firewire, the port has a transfer rate of 400 Mb / s (version of a) & 800 Mb / s (version b) used for external hard drive
- eSATA port instead of a new external hard drive with USB or firewire.
- Serial port, port to VGA (only on motherboards with onboard VGA)
- Sound Port, consisting of several ports such as:
Mic, is commonly used port for headset
Front, for the front speakers or commonly used in stereo speakers
Center, Left, Right, Rear, Front: port for 5.1 surround speakers
Some of the terms in the Motherboard
FSB (Front Side Bus)
In the microprocessor, at memory FSB connects the processor with the main processor FSB is used to communicate with other components on the motherboard.
HSF (Heat Sink Fan)
A component assigned to absorb heat. Usually made of aluminum. Addition Fan (fan) will improve the cooling performance of the heatsink
IDE (Integrated Drive Electronics)
A type of hardware interface that serves to connect the hard disk, CD-ROMs, and tape drives on a PC. IDE is very popular and widely used because it provides a comparatively economical way to connect hardware components.
IDE Controller
One of the functions of the chipset on the motherboard to regulate data communications peripherals.
LGA1155
LGA or Land Grid Array is a type of CPU used socet, especially Intel. Now the pin is in the socket, not the processor again. While the 1155 figure is an indication of the total number of legs pin processor.
MicroATX
MicroATX term used for this type of dimensions accommodated by the motherboard, also used the case to the motherboard placement.
Southbridge
Under southbridge chipset heatsink that there is a function to set the input and output of several components such as hard drives, optical drives, USB ports, and PCI Express expansion slots. Along with the many demands of the process that must be done, so now it comes with the chipset heatsink to make it more stable.
Northbridge
Located under the Chipset heatsink fan is equipped to work with the southbridge chipset to set the video card, processor, and memory. In this chipset has several new features that can provide high-speed ports for LAN connections and added extra PCI Express.
PATA / ATA
Parallel Advanced Technology Attachment is an implementation of the parallel data communication with the controller-based disk drive IDE with a data width of 8-bit.
SATA (Serial ATA)
The evolution of the Parallel ATA storage interface that uses serial communications. SATA connected point-to-point so as to achieve transfer speeds up to 150 Mbps.
