Within three hours after the start of their activities, users who use file-sharing service BitTorrent to download illegally popular content will begin to be supervised by a monitoring agency.

It was revealed by the study a research team from the University of Birmingham, UK.

"If the content is included in the top 100 most popular, pengunduhnya will begin to be tracked in a matter of hours," said Dr. Tom Chotia, led the research team that the University of Birmingham.

Data monitoring results can be used by copyright owners to track downloads are done illegally

Research was conducted over a period of three years by a team consisting of computer scientists. They create a program that works like a BitTorrent client, and record all the connections to the program.

As a result, it was found that the oversight activities of BitTorrent can affect anyone, whether users who frequently download or for the plunge into the world of illegal file-sharing.

"You do not have to be the one to download content in bulk. Those who only download one movie alone will contribute tracked," said Dr. Chotia.

Research Dr. Chotia identified 10 institutions that records user activity monitoring BitTorrent. Some of them are copyright enforcement organizations and security companies.

BitTorrent users monitor their purpose unclear. Some monitoring agencies suspected of selling data to copyright holders for marketing purposes. "Because these data could indicate what types of content are popular and where," said Dr. Chothia again.

Even so, Dr. Chiotia doubt that the data monitoring can be used in court. "All the monitors were studied in the research will terknoneksi to file dividers and can verify that they are indeed using BitTorrent software, but these monitors can not be used to obtain the relevant file sharing objects."
